A person's need for corrective lenses can be reduced or even eliminated with laser eye surgery. These procedures are referred to as refractive surgery. They can help or cure nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Currently, a procedure called LASIK is the most common method for correction.

LASIK involves using a blade or laser to cut a flap into the cornea. Then, a laser is used to reshape the cornea so it focuses light more accurately. The flap is then replaced and allowed to heal naturally over time.

Other laser procedures may be a better suited for you, so speak to your doctor about which is best. The IOL procedure (intraocular lens procedure) is used to treat cataracts.
