Cataract Surgery

A cataract is like a cloud over the eye's lens, interfering with quality of vision and making normal activities, such as driving a car, reading a newspaper or seeing people's faces, increasingly difficult.

Astigmatism is caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea or the lens and hampers the ability to see fine detail. Astigmatism affects vision at all distances and is a separate vision problem from cataracts.

Cataract surgery - an important decision
You may have some questions so make sure you discuss any questions you have with the doctor who will perform your surgery. This is the best way to get clear answers that apply specifically to your vision and the cataract procedure you're considering. Cataract surgery is generally a common outpatient procedure, generally with little discomfort, requiring only a few hours and a topical anesthetic. The goal os the operation is to break the old, cloudy lens into pieces, remove the pieces from the eye and insert a replacement lens to reaplace the natural lens. Traditionally, the surgeon would accomplish these tasks by making a tiny incision in the eye and then using an instrument about the size of a pen tip. Now, patients also have the option of choosing a bladeless, computer-controlled refractive cataract leaser to perform several of the most critical steps of cataract surgery.

A custom tailored solution for your eyes
While all human eyes share the same basic anatomical structure, every eye is just a bit different in terms of size, depth, curvature of the cornea and other key features. Which is why every eye must be carefully measured and mapped prior to cataract surgery. While these measurements have been routinely performed prior to surgery, the LenSx Laser uses a range of highly advanced technologies - including integrated optical coherence tomography (OCT) - to capture precise, high-resolution images of your eyes. These images are then used to plan and perform a surgery to exacting specifications not attainable with traditional surgery.

A new cataract procedure
Now you can benefit from a new technological breakthrough for use in cataract surgery. The Alexandria Eye Clinic now offers highly customized, computer-controlled, bladeless cataract surgery. It allows our surgeons to plan and perform your surgery to exacting, individualized specifications not attainable with traditional surgical methods.

As the eye ages, the lens becomes cloudier, allowing less light to pass through. The light that doesn't make it to the retina is diffused or scattered, leaving vision defocused and blurry.

With astigmatism, the surface of the cornea has an uneven curvature, shaped more like a football than a basketball and vision becomes distorted. This common irregularity, called a "corneal astigmatism," causes blurred or distorted vision because light rays are not focused on one spot to provide clear vision.

Is cataract surgery safe?
All surgery has risks, however, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most common surgical procedures performed. The actual procedure involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).

How long does it take to recover from cataract surgery?
Recovery after cataract surgery is generally quick and usually occurs within only a few days. Most patients have improved vision soon after surgery, and your sight may continue to improve for several days or weeks.
